The South Tama boys wrestlers took to the mats last Thursday to compete in their home duals meet. Taking the trip to face off against the Trojans was conference opponents the Solon Spartans and Marion Wolves.

To start off the duals, Solon defeated Marion in dominant fashion with a 60-18 victory. The dual started off close with Marion’s Hunter Horak at 165 and Adam Rose at 175 both winning on a fall. But it was all Solon from there on out as Kyler Jensen at 190, Lucas Feuerbach at 215, and Grant Wilson at 285 at recorded convincing victories for the Spartans to boost them to the win over Marion.

Coming off of the win against Marion it was now South Tama’s turn to take on Solon. The Trojans started off great with two dominant wins by Cyrus Mathes at 165 and Marcus Bear at 175. Following them shortly after was two-time state qualifier Gavin Bridgewater who took a close 6-3 victory at 215 against Solon’s Lucas Feuerbach to help increase South Tama’s lead. Later on in the dual South Tama picked up wins from Cale Graff at 113 and Eligh Branan at 126. But ultimately Solon proved to have just a bit more than the Trojans on the day, as they survived with a 40-23 victory over STC.

With Solon already taking the meet win, it was a fight for second place as South Tama wrestled against Marion. Once again Bear, Branan, and Bridgewater got the Trojans out to an early lead, all three winning by falls. Later on in the round Clayton Babinat and MaCael Bear would both achieve falls to allow South Tama take the lead over Marion late into the dual. Then to cap it off on senior night, senior Cyrus Mathes won his dual at 165 pounds 9-7 over Hunter Horak of Marion to secure a 49-30 victory for the Trojans.

Fittingly, three South Tama seniors all went undefeated on senior night, Mathes, Gavin Bridgewater and Branan. Also sophomore Marcus Bear joined the Trojan seniors in going undefeated on the night. Solon took the team victory going 2-0, followed by South Tama who went 1-1. South Tama was back in action again on Thursday in Williamsburg to take on another pair of conference opponents.
