STC Varsity Softball is back. After not fielding a varsity team last season, the Trojans are back and ready to play a full schedule. Softball numbers in Iowa have been consistently decreasing over the last decade, so the problem is not specific to the STC school district.

Long time Head Coach Chelsea Ahrens gave up the reins to STC Softball before the start of last year’s season, when Lon Wilkerson took to the plate and assumed the head coaching position for the Trojans alongside assistant coach Steve Chyma. Ahrens now coaches softball at the middle school level in hopes of building the program from the bottom up.

Wilkerson and Chyma talked highly of their team, describing a fun and welcoming environment that gets down to business when it’s necessary. With a relatively young and inexperienced team the Trojans will continue building skills and fundamentals of softball throughout the season.

“Every single practice we’re working on fundamentals, over and over,” Chyma said.

With an eye towards the future, the Trojan Softball program looks to reload and build back stronger than ever in their return to varsity softball action.
