STC soccer wins doubleheader victory

On Thursday, May 4, the STC boys and girls soccer teams both pulled out wins in WaMac Conference action against West Delaware.

Coming into the contest, the boys posted a 2-6 win loss record, while the girls were 0-10.

Girls Soccer Bests West Delaware 6-0

First up in the double header was the STC Girls Soccer team, pulling out their first win of the season in a 5-1 victory over the visiting West Delaware Hawks.

Head Coach Morgan McFate talked about the Trojans shifting momentum.

“The team as a whole felt revived and refreshed after that win. We really needed that to get our morale back up and realize we’re great soccer players. We just have quite a few cards stacked against us as well, but if we batten down and play soccer then we will come out just fine!” she said.

At halftime, the Trojans led 3-0, but McFate didn’t let them get complacent.

“I told the girls we don’t want to get comfortable for 40 more minutes and assume we’ll come out on top. These next 40 are going to be an all out battle of sheer will and if you think you can be complacent now you will get buried, which we saw as soon as we started to get a little lazy and not care as much about our passes WD was able to score,” she said. “That also fired up the girls as we didn’t want to allow or give up any more points to them for the game. “

Leading the Trojans was senior Martha Flores with two goals on the night. Another star of the home team was junior Andrea Padilla. Playing midfielder, Padilla drew on her years of cross country experience and general wealth of soccer knowledge to keep up with the fast paced games and contribute to both offensive and defensive plays for the Trojans.

Padilla played an uneasy game but settled in and eventually scored one of the Trojans’ five goals.

Martinez leads Trojans with six against conference competition

Continuing momentum on Trojan Field, the STC boys took down the Hawks in a dominant 8-0 win. Dragging the Hawks through the first half 5-0. With another 40 minutes on the play clock, the Hawks were able to hold on and slowed the Trojans’ relentless goal pace, only letting another three STC goals slip by.

Highlighting the game was Sophomore Allan Martinez. The young Trojan forward scored six of the eight points for the home team. Martinez has shown consistently advanced striking abilities despite his young age.

Both teams gained immense momentum heading towards the postseason. The last time an STC soccer team qualified for state was 2015.
