South Tama Track and Field Concludes Indoor Season
On Saturday, March 18, South Tama County’s Track and Field Team took to the Grinnell College Fieldhouse to compete in the Wamac Indoor Track and Field Championships.
-Emma Harwick took 2nd place in high jump, clearing a height of 4’8″
-Kortney Babinat’s throw of 34′ 8.5″ earned her a 3rd place finish in the shot put
-In a dominant display, Tommy Tyynismaa won the boys 800 meters. Not only did Tommy win by over 7 seconds, he also broke the meet record in the event. The previous record was set in 2014 by Mitch Steger of Beckman Catholic. Tyynismaa’s time of 2:00.15 took 2.17 seconds off of Steger’s time
-Sophomore Tyrus Clegg, in his first year of track, is making an immediate impact. Clegg has found early success in the long jump with an impressive jump of 19′ 5″
-The quartet of James Brant, Holden Schermer, Braxten Rhors, and Tommy Tyynismaa achieved a 2nd place finish in the 4×800 meter relay. With a time of 8:35.01 first place barely eluded the Trojans as Mount Vernon narrowly won by a mere five hundredths of a second
-In the final event of the meet, the boys 4×4 secured a 3rd place finish. James Brant, Trey Etzen, Braxten Rhors, and -Tommy Tyynismaa brought the baton around the track in a time of 3:44.17
Both boys and girls teams now turn their focus to the outdoor season. The Trojans next meet will be Monday, March 27 at Benton.
