South Tama takes 2nd at EM/GMG Mustang Duals

LE GRAND — The South Tama boys’ wrestling team finished second, and host East Marshall/GMG came in sixth out of eight teams at the Mustang Duals on Saturday.

South Tama went 3-0 in pool play and closed the meet with a 46-27 loss to Benton Community in the title match. STC defeated North Polk (48-28), Collins-Maxwell (82-0), and East Marshall/GMG (57-18) to advance to the title round.

The Trojans were led by five wrestlers who finished the day with 4-0 records: Cale Graff (106 pounds), Eligh Branan (120), Amare Chavez (126), MaCael Bear (132), and Gavin Bridgewater (195). Graff posted two pins and won twice by forfeit, and Branan had one pin, one technical fall, and two minor decisions.

Chavez, ranked second by IAwrestle, had three pins and a decision, while the 12th-ranked Bear had two pins, a forfeit, and a decision. Bridgewater, the new No. 1 at 195, had three pins and received a forfeit.

Cyrus Mathes (152) and eighth-ranked Rudy Papakee (220/285) both finished the day 3-1. Mathes posted one pin, a major decision, and received a forfeit, while his lone loss was against No. 7 Brenden Heying of Benton Community. Papakee had a pin, a decision, and a forfeit. His lone loss was at heavyweight against Benton.

The South Tama boys return to the mat Saturday with the WaMaC Conference meet at 10 a.m. at Independence High School.
