Warriors get two on all-Iowa Star South team
After winning 18 games and reaching the second round of the playoffs before a loss to Waterloo Christian, the Meskwaki girls’ basketball team put two players on the All-Iowa Star South Division first team and added another on the second team.
Geanna Bear and Wakinyela Bear were first-team honorees for the Warriors, with Geanna making the step up after being an honorable mention in 2019-20 and second team in 2020-21. She averaged 10.9 points, 6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.9 steals per game for the Warriors, playing as a strong No. 2 option on offense and helping spur on Meskwaki’s strong 1-2-1-1 press scheme on defense with turnovers and deflections.
Wakinyela Bear was the Warriors’ leading scorer after moving to Meskwaki from Denver, Colorado, and the senior made an immediate impact for Meskwaki on both ends of the floor. Averaging 17.9 points per game and hitting 43 percent of shots from the floor, Wakinyela added 5.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game on offense, along with 3.9 steals per contest on the defensive side of the ball.
Sophomore Sia Bear made an appearance on the second team after upping her averages to 7.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game. Sia was an all-energy player and showed improved ability driving on the offensive end as well.
Kalayna White earned honorable mention honors as a sophomore after a year where she averaged 4.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals per contest.
On the boys side, the Warrior’s landed one player on the all-conference second team, senior guard Larnell Bear.
Bear was a top-5 scorer in the Iowa Star South and led his team averaging 16.4 points per game, 4.5 assists per game and 3.5 steals per game.
Senior Dayvin Guevara was named an all-conference honorable mention as a key defender for the Warriors, averaging a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game along with five blocks.
