STC Girls Tennis Falls to Mount Vernon

Battling wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour, the South Tama County Girls Tennis Team took on defending WAMAC Tennis Champions Mount Vernon on Thursday, April 6 at Cornell College. The Mustangs defeated South Tama by a score of 9-0.

Sophomore Abbie Morgan found herself in the most competitive match of the meet at #6 Singles. She locked into battle with Jessica Barske in a match that saw Morgan grab a 7-5 lead. The talented senior from Mount Vernon battled back to grab the next three games to lead 8-7. Facing defeat, Morgan converted the next game to even things at 8-8 and force a tiebreaker. Barske faired better in the tiebreaker to notch a 7-3 victory for the win and a final score of 9-8 (3).

Senior Laura Fernandez-Garcia took on Grace Pelley at #4 Singles. Pelley proved experienced enough to nab the win for the Mustangs by a score of 8-3. Senior Serena Lowe continues to improve with every match that she plays. Facing Paige Pospisil at #5 Singles, Lowe battled the wind and her experienced opponent before falling 1-8.

Senior Brycelyn Haughey has the difficult task of playing the best player of each team as she represents South Tama at #1 Singles. On this night, Senior Wynne Vandersall was across the net. Vandersall’s consistency proved too good as she posted an 8-0 victory for the home team. Junior Bri Nelson came up short against Brittney Darrow at #2 Singles. Nelson grabbed the first game of the match before Darrow reeled off eight straight to win 8-1. Courtney Anderson matched up against Katie Wycoff at #3 Singles. Wycoff cruised to an 8-1 win for the Mustangs.

In doubles action, the team of Lowe/Morgan again paced the Trojans. Facing Bianca Kladivo/Amanda Dragon, the team from South Tama matched their opponents early in the match. Utilizing strong net play, Lowe/Morgan again showed they are a team that is beginning to understand their roles. In the end, the Mount Vernon Team notched an 8-5 win for their team at #3 Doubles.

Stepping to the court at #2 Doubles for STC were Anderson/Fernandez-Garcia to take on Wycoff/Darrow. Frustrated by the wind and their opponents, the senior duo suffered a 0-8 defeat. At #1 Doubles, Haughey/Nelson dropped a 2-8 decision at the hands of Vandersall/Pelley.

In JV Action, South Tama grabbed an 8-4 victory over Mount Vernon. The Trojans tallied wins by the following doubles teams: Anna Glendy/Zoee Buffalo, Alexes Baeza/Ashley Thomazin, Allison Thomazin/Alexes Baeza, Abby Buffalo/Zoee Buffalo, Anna Dvorak/Abby Buffalo, Daniela Contreras/Briana Jensen, and Enriqueta Diego/Addie Romero (2).
