JV basketball beats Vinton-Shellsburg for first win

The STC JV girls basketball team received their first win against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes at home on Friday, Dec. 9. The final score was 43-18.

Starting for South Tama was junior Kelsie York-Morris, freshman Makayla Backen, sophomores Madison Rohach, Jaelin Berger,and Taylor Ray.

The Trojans started off strong scoring 14 points in the first quarter. Backen was the first to score, but sophomore Zoee Buffalo, Ray, Rohach, and Berger all contributed baskets. The Trojans played solid defense only allowing Vinton two points, both from free throws, ending the first quarter ahead with a score of 14-2.

South Tama continued to put up shots and play good defense in the second quarter. Both Berger and Backen visited the free throw line and Ray and York-Morris added to the Trojan’s score. Just before the buzzer York-Morris received a pass and scored, putting South Tama up 21-5 at the end of the first half.

The second half saw a few three pointers from the Trojans, the first coming from Berger and another from Rohach. The Vikettes managed to score 7 points in the third quarter, but South Tama was still up for the start of the fourth quarter, 27-12. York-Morris added another three point shot with Buffalo, Backen, and sophomore Abbie Morgan scoring in the fourth quarter to add up to the 43 points scored by the Trojans.
