Pastor’s Corner: Seize the Yay!
Pastor Mike Nodland of the Christian Fellowship Church in Vining, IA.
Baskin-Robbins made popular their new tagline, “Seize the Yay” in 2022 to highlight that each day should be enjoyable. They established themselves as the place to go, for 31 flavors, one for each day of the month. The idea was to seize the moment and enjoy life.
As a kid walking home from school one really hot day, I stopped by an ice cream shop to buy their biggest ice cream cone. Walking home eating what seemed to be half a gallon, ice cream cone, I fought against that cone, chasing the ice cream down my elbow with vengeance.
We had no 31 flavors, just vanilla and chocolate from that store. There was no hand dipped, chocolate cones, sugar or waffle cones, either. So, when Baskin Robbins exploded on the scene with 31 flavors, I sensed a dietary obligation to “Seize the Yay” myself. My dad enjoyed Rocky Road, I liked chocolate mint and my sisters ate anything pink in it. Eventually, my parents opted for Sherbet with much less fat, figuring it was a healthier alternative to regular ice cream. They didn’t know that it contained high levels of sugar resulting in a buzz that compelled me to jump on my bike and chase screeching neighborhood cats through backyards. Want to truly “Seize the Yay?” Trust Jesus!
