Questions legality of Iowa Senate legislation regarding Meskwakis

Leter to the Editor:

The bill recently passed before the Iowa Senate is obviously illegal. The Interstate Commerce Act holds authority over reservations and settlements, (who endeavor to have the same rights as reservations for gambling.)

If the Federal Government holds that they are in charge of overseeing capital crimes on the settlement, then a state legislature has no power to abridge the rights of the federal, that have already been assigned to it. Period.

This idea of resolving a duplication or amending the law to make up for past crimes for the white man, is illegal.

It is also illegal for the Meskwaki Nation to take away Tama County land so it is no longer taxed. This taxation helps to support the community I live in. The fourteenth amendment specifically say with due process one cannot have their life, liberty or pursuit of happiness taken away ecxept by a court of law enacting sanction for crimes I may have committed.

The Supervisors of Tama County should be jailed for allowing this to happen. They specifically took the oath of office to defend the constitution.

Next time I get fined for running a stoplight I’m going to tell Tama County Associate Attorney Patrick McMullen, that their bosses don’t have to follow the law, then why should I?. The Meskwaki Nation in my opinion to be served by what is universally recognized, as one of the best legal systems in the world.
