Valentine Chester Davenport Jr., 83, of Tama passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. Traditional Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Meskwaki Cemetery on the Meskwaki Settlement with Homer Bear Jr. as speaker. A traditional wake will be held Tuesday evening at the Bear Clan Ceremonial Building on Meskwaki Settlement in rural Tama.

Chester was born on March 11, 1934 to Vera Thompson Davenport and Valentine Davenport Sr. He was a Golden Gloves Boxing champion. He loved spending time with family and watching football.

Chester is survived by best friend, Verna Davenport; his children: Doreen Roberts, Richard Birkey (Stephanie), Eunice Davenport, Andrea Davenport, Carla Davenport, Lyle Davenport, Jill Davenport, Ty Davenport (Judy), Elke Davenport, Virgil Lasley (Lori), Eric Kapayou (Janet), Mary Youngbear, Craig Youngbear (Mai), Nina Youngbear, Kristina Youngbear(Tom), George Youngbear III, Dallas Poweshiek, and Delmer Whitebreast (Staphne); Siblings: Dean Whitebreast (Hattie), Gayle Walker (Aaron), and Leonard Johnson (Barbara) ; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand children, and great grand children.

Chester was preceded in death by parents, Vera Thompson Davenport and Valentine Davenport Sr.; Brother and sisters, Andrew Davenport, Evelyn Climber, and Eunice Davenport; two sons, Eric Davenport and Gordon Miles; Nephews, Rudy Papakee Sr. , and Randy Papakee.
