Helen Marie Hala

Helen Marie Hala, 87, of Tama, passed away, surrounded by her family, Monday, April 13, 2015, at her home under the care of Iowa River Hospice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 17, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, from 5-7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Helen was born on Sept. 8, 1927 in rural Chelsea, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Agnes (Lebeda) Hurt.

She graduated from Toledo High School.

She married Truman Titcomb in 1946 and they later divorced. In 1965, she married Steve Hala and he passed away in 1990. Helen worked for the Telephone Company, Lennox and was Deputy Clerk of Court in Tama County for several years. In her retirement years, she worked at Ben Franklin in Tama. Helen was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama and Farm Bureau. Earlier in life, she enjoyed golf and playing accordion. Helen had a passion for reading, visiting with people and spending time with her grandkids.

Survivors include her children, Steve (Linda) Titcomb of Toledo, Dave Titcomb of Marshalltown, Cindy (Mike) Anderson of Toledo, Julie (Penny) Henle of Tama and Jim (Pam) Hala of Toledo; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three step-children, Patty (Gary) Spears of LeGrand, Nancy Hala of Marshalltown, and Steven (Pam) Hala of Toledo; five step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren, one brother, Louis (Charlene) Hurt of Irving; one sister, Mary (George) Lowe of Tama; and her beloved dog, Sammy.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Steve; one daughter, Rebecca Doyle; one step son, Bernie Hala; one sister, Mildred Foreman; two nieces; and one nephew.

A memorial fund has been established.
