‘Miriam McFate’s Travel Journal: 1926’ set for Nov. 11 at Wieting Theatre

TOLEDO – The Tama County Historical Society will host a program by Mark McFate chronicling his grandparents’ 41-day, 2,800 cross-country journey through the lens of his grandmother’s travel journal. The program will take place Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wieting Theatre (101 S. Church St, Toledo).

Clarence and Miriam McFate of rural Poweshiek County built a makeshift home on the back of their Model TT Ford truck and packed three adults, five children, and a dog for a six-week journey to Long Beach, Calif. They travelled more than 2,800 miles in 41 days, 35 of those spent on the road moving from camp to camp.

Miriam kept a journal chronicling the experience, and 100 years later, her grandson Mark will share what he’s learned from its rich text, along with supporting materials he’s found during his research.

This event is free and open to the public.
