A now former Tama County jailer has been arrested and charged with two counts of second degree sexual abuse, both Class B felonies, over events that allegedly occurred in 2023.

On Monday, the Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) arrested 21-year-old Clayton Killian of Dysart, who was hired as a Tama County jailer in November of 2022.

“The events which gave rise to his arrest allegedly occurred in 2023 and did not involve his employment. The Tama County Sheriff’s Office had no information or indication Killian was allegedly engaged in any criminal activity during the time period of his employment,” a press release from the Tama County Sheriff’s Office read.

This May, the Toledo Police Department took a report alleging the 2023 misconduct by Killian before notifying the Sheriff’s Office and the DCI and requesting assistance with the investigation. Upon notification to the Sheriff’s Office, Killian was immediately placed on administrative leave.

“The DCI conducted an independent and impartial criminal investigation and eventually charged Killian with the offenses described above,” the press release reads. “With the DCI investigation now complete, our office will seek to conclude the administrative investigation. Killian is no longer an employee of the Tama County Sheriff’s Office.”

The investigation remains ongoing. A criminal complaint alleges that in the summer of 2023, when Killian was 19, he engaged in sexual acts with a 13-year-old female on three or four occasions and offered her alcoholic beverages the first time they were together.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 29 at 9 a.m., and Killian is not currently listed as an inmate in the Tama County Jail after posting a $25,000 bond.
