Public hearing set for sale of properties as hunt for old middle school buyer continues

At Monday night’s South Tama County school board meeting, many projects continued moving forward.

The board set a public hearing for May 26 regarding the sale of a vacant lot in Tama, the tennis courts in Toledo, as well as the old football field east of the old middle school.

Additionally, Superintendent John Cain updated the board that the potential buyer of the old middle school has remained in contact and has all necessary materials to move forward as well as contact information of the City of Toledo and Tama County Economic Development. Bids on the property will be accepted until May 8.

The board approved 2026-27 wage increases for both certified and support staff.

For staff, the agreement includes a $700 base salary increase, with a $300 bonus for staff with 20 years of experience, and a starting salary increase for teachers from $50,000 to $51,000. Cain also said the district will continue working to reduce salary compaction by identifying staff who are below the district’s intended salary trajectory and moving them closer to where they should be based on experience and education.

The board also heard from the new Future Business Leaders of America chapter, which in its first year has over 30 participants and is sending a group of students to nationals. The group is sponsored by business teacher Melody Vallente.

The next board meeting is scheduled for May 11.
