STC Winter Concert set for Monday, Dec. 16

Band and choir display semester of work

On Monday, Dec. 16, the South Tama County High School music department will host their annual winter concert. Starting at 7 p.m., the night will be the culmination of a semester’s worth of work and the debut of the STC Choir under the direction of John Loos.

Loos speaks highly of his students and the transition into his leadership.

“While the transition to a new director can be quite a challenge for many choirs, the South Tama choir has done so excellently. In a few short months, I have seen significant progress in their abilities, and we are developing a culture and routine that will allow this progress to continue going forward,” he said. “I am so excited to share all that we have done this semester on Monday, and I invite all who can make it to come see what’s been going on in our choir room.”

The choir’s repertoire includes; Hands Are Knockin’ by Kyle Pederson, Dies Irae by Ryan Main, I Loved All Lovely Things by Andrea Ramsey, and Anita Kerr’s arrangement of My Way.

Mike Carnahahn eagerly laid out the pieces the band has been preparing;

“The band will be performing Themes From The Nutcracker, a piece we traditionally perform every year. This was something we did while I was in High School at Perry so it’s sort of an homage to my years there but it’s also a great arrangement,” he said. “The Legend Of Greensleeves, a unique arrangement of the 15th century English folk song. C’est Noel, which is a collection of a few common carols woven together throughout the piece.Finally, Nathan Hale Trilogy, this is a three movement work depicting the life of the legendary American hero.”

Additionally, Carnahan shared high praise of the event.

“Our annual Winter Concert is something I believe the community looks forward to each year as a way to get in the holiday spirit as well as to hear some great music being performed by our outstanding student musicians,” he said.

Both Loos and Carnahan encourage the community to come support local musicians and enjoy a free concert.
