Toledo council accepts Officer Savage’s resignation

This week’s Toledo Council meeting was a bit of a snoozer. Everything kicked off with the sale of a vacated alley at 301 N County Road. During the 30 second public hearing, only crickets could be heard. The sale and everything with it went through and was approved without a hitch.

The biggest item on the agenda was the resignation of Toledo Police Officer Cole Savage. Savage is moving on to the Tama County Sheriff’s Department. This leaves two empty slots open on the Toledo Police force. It was agreed that advertisements for a new officer would be put up.

South Tama Community Schools requested that the city of Toledo pay half of the asbestos mitigation that has been newly discovered at the former Iowa Juvenile Home, and the council agreed to send a letter back denying this request.

One of the council’s December meetings was changed to Wednesday, Dec. 27, at their usual meeting time.

The public works department reported that even though the town had the first major snow of the year, it didn’t call for plows. The Fire Department is getting a new sign, and they’ve been working on the base. They have also been working on solving the problem of concrete in manholes, left from when the DOT changed the highway from a four-lane to a three.

Police Chief Dan Quigley reported that between Nov. 13 and Nov. 26, they responded to 127 calls to service and affected no arrests. The police Tahoe has an appointment to get its brakes checked as they are squealing. They are working on getting the open positions filled, and with Savage leaving, Chief Quigley will go back into the patrol rotation.
