Safe Track, SRO and Middle School construction all discussed during board meeting

On Monday, Aug. 7, the STC School Board was in session. Items ranged from app purchase to construction bids.

To open the meeting high school principal Robert Boley informed the board in the public comments that the high school is moving to a seven period day instead of eight periods. The change was credited to staff shortages and recent credit requirement discussions. Boley left the meeting to celebrate his anniversary, seeming to be the reason for the item only being in the public comments.

Dixie Forcht and Seth Koch both spoke during public comments, expressing staff concerns for clarification on language and interpretation of board policy.

The ongoing item of purchasing The Safe Track mobile app concluded with board approval of purchasing the app for the district at a cost of $10,000. Middle School Principal Ben Adams was in attendance and made some informal clarifications to the board.

The Tama-Toledo News Chronicle was reapproved as the district official publication source for the 23-24 school year.

Garling Construction was awarded the bid for phase two of the middle school project. Estimates came in around $27 million while Garling was contracted for $25,669,000 with alternate 1 at $20,000.00 and alternate 2 at $38,000.00.

Toledo Police Chief Dan Quigley stopped in and updated the board along with Superintendent Cain on the progress of the school resource officer. FInalizations are being made to the agreements between the cities of Tama and Toledo along with the school district. A candidate has been identified and is eager to start. More information will follow.

Redistricting maps are awaiting approval from the state before being published for candidates looking to run for school board this fall. The district will publish these maps when they are inevitably approved.

Finally the next school board meeting will take place Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m. The change comes to accommodate back to school night during Monday’s normal meeting time.
