With overcast skies and the occasional sprinkling of rain, kids were scarce for the first half of the Toledo Public Library’s Pedalpalooza last Saturday. Adults stood around with their bike chains in their hands, waiting for some kids to wander out.
In lieu of children, entertainment was had in the form of a bike race between Toledo Police Chief Dan Quigley and Toledo Police Officer Colin Price. Though the Chief left everything on the obstacle course, Officer Price left him in his dust with a 27-second time.
After the sun made an appearance, children started to come out of the woodwork. As their bikes were taken over to the pit stop to have their tire pressures checked and bolts tightened, the kids walked over and were fitted for a helmet by Chief Quigley and Officer Price.
With their bikes freshly inspected and sporting their new helmets, the kids tried out the obstacle course, weaving around traffic cones. Inside the library, the kids had the opportunity to trick out their rides in the ‘Pimp my Bike’ area. As straws and pipe cleaners were added to spokes, a few kiddos also got butterflies painted on them, in the face painting section.
Although Pedalpalooza had a slow start to the day, its success could be seen in the smiles of all the children who attended.
