TOLEDO – Jokes and puns were volleyed back and forth between almost everyone at the Toledo City Council meeting on Monday, June 12. The subject of the group’s wit was the proposition of keeping chickens inside the city limits.

This was brought forth because Birkwood Village has hatched and is currently raising a number of chickens. After much humorous discussion, the council decided to wait until they received more information from Birkwood Village. Or, in the words of city attorney Michael Marquess, the chickens will be put on the back burner.

The Kid’s Corner Daycare lease was discussed. Rent is currently set at $935, and the council is thinking of raising that to $1,500. A decision was not officially made and more discussions will be had.

Chief Quigley reported that between May 29 and June 11, the Toledo Police Department had 162 calls to service and issued six arrests. The new police vehicle took third place in a Safety Vehicle Car Show. Stop stick training was done on the 4th. Officers also responded to one call where a weapon was being brandished; this turned out to be a child with a spray painted squirt gun.

An amendment to the zoning ordinance was approved. The council also approved the resignation of Sandra Atchison from the Planning and Zoning board.

A public hearing date was set for June 26th, for the temporary RAGBRAI ordinance. Details for the School Resource Officer are still being ironed out.

A public hearing was held in flash for the sale of 408 W. Ross, along with two quickly approved resolutions. The council also set a public hearing to vacate an alley at 600 S Church for July 10.
