CONTRIBUTED PHOTO — Tama Mayor Doug Ray recently signed the proclamation for poppy distribution to begin during the Lincoln Highway Days, coming up this weekend. Brenda Youngbear, American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Chairman, looked on and approved.

The proclamation reads as follows: “I, Doug Ray, Mayor of the city of Tama ,Iowa, do hereby declare the month of May 2023 as the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Month and Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20, 2023 as Poppy Days in the City of Tama. The red crepe paper Poppy is the symbol of the little red poppies that grew in the battlefields and graveyards in France during World War 1. These poppies remind us of the sacrifice our servicemen have given during World War 1, World War II, the Korean War, the War in Vietnam and the Wars of Panama, Granada and Desert Storm. All proceeds from the Poppy Distribution are used for the benefit of Veterans and their families in the local community. Doug Ray, Mayor.
