Dog attack leads to death of Meskwaki woman

A vicious attack by a pack of dogs took the life of a young woman on the Meskwaki Settlement on Monday, March 28.

The Meskwaki Nation Police Department reported the incident in a Facebook post Monday afternoon and later in the week confirmed the victim in the incident was 27-year-old Chaille Morgan of Tama.

According to the post, the fatal attack took place in the area of Springs Road on the Meskwaki Settlement.

Springs Road is located just over one mile southeast of the Meskwaki Casino, and south of U.S. Highway 30, near the Iowa River.

Details of the incident have not yet been made public due to the “sensitivity of the situation.”

The department provided an update later Monday that said all of the dogs suspected to have been involved in the incident had been killed.

Support services for community members and tribal staff impacted by the incident have been made available through the Meskwaki Tribal Health Clinic and through Elevate, a certified community behavioral health clinic in Waterloo that serves Tama County.
