The Toledo Fire Department and Ambulance responded to a mobile home fire Saturday evening. The fire at South Prospect Drive lot 47 resulted in loss of personal property, home damage and the death of one dog and two rabbits. Toledo was assisted by Tama Fire and Ambulance and local law enforcement. Amber Greif (pictured below left with some of her children) lived in the home. The fire was contained to the kitchen where there was the most significat damage (below right).

A mobile home fire caused major damage and resulted in the death of one dog, two puppies and a rabbit over the weekend.

The Toledo Fire Department and Ambulance responded to 1008 South Prospect Drive lot 47 Saturday evening shortly after 7 p.m. Upon arrival the crew discovered several dogs, puppies and rabbits most of which were rescued from the home by various members of the fire department.

According to Toledo Fire Chief, Greg Johnson, the fire started and was confined to the kitchen. It took just under two hours for the department to put the fire out and clean up.

Toledo was assisted by the Tama Fire Department and Ambulance and Tama County Sheriff’s Department.

Residents of the home include Amber Greif, Nicholas Craghead and a 9-month-old baby.

Amber Greif (pictured below left with some of her children) lived in the home.

Greif received the phone call no one ever wants to get while she was out of town. The family had been in Waterloo when the call came.

As they rushed back to Toledo Greif said she was hoping for the best while preparing for the worst.

When they arrived Greif discovered her beloved dog Jami whom she had for the past four years did not survive. Two puppies also died in the fire while five others are being nursed by a mama dog at the Tama County Humane Society.

Two other dogs, Jake and Memphis, were transferred to Town and Country Veterinary Clinic. They are both back with Greif and Craghead. Jake is suffering from smoke inhalation and Memphis has a cough.

Greif and Craghead have five boys between the two who currently live with other family members. Each of the five boys lost items due to the fire.

The fire was contained to the kitchen where there was the most significat damage (below right).

Adding to their woes, they also discovered recently they did not have insurance due to a clerical error. Adding insult to injury, Greif also said she has noticed some items missing from the home and believes there are people going into the home taking things.

Despite the tragedy they have endured, at this time they are working to clean and salvage what they can.

“Everytime we go back into that house it’s heartbreak all over again,” Greif said.

There is a GoFund me set up for Greif and her family. They have also contacted the Red Cross and are currently working to get assistance.
