The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office and the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council sponsored high school students from across Iowa at the capitol to participate in Capitol Youth Day celebrating Democracy Day on March 26 and 28. Some 300 students attended each day. Among the students on hand were 15 seniors from Meskwaki Settlement High School.

This program provides a non-partisan overview of the importance of civic participation and the electoral process.

Democracy Day is a celebration that was started in March of 2011 by Rock the Vote to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 26th Amendment and to promote civic education in high schools.

Students had the opportunity to meet with available members of the state legislature and statewide elected officials; participate in an interactive election activity; tour the Capitol (dome included); and participate in a student rally.

Students are challenged to take what they learn throughout the day and use it in their daily activities.

On each day there was a rally in the capitol beginning Elected officials and sponsors were recognized, and the results of a mock election announced. This year’s ballot asked students to vote for their favorites on a variety of topics, including favorite State Fair food and school subject.
