97th Meskwaki Powwow starts on Thursday, Aug. 11

Toledo Chronicle-It’s Powwow time and the 97th annual event starts Thursday on the Meskwaki Indian Settlement west of Tama.

There’s four days of Native American ceremonial dancing with those taking part dressed in colorful and traditional regalia.

Performances are at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily.

On opening day, Thursday, Aug. 11, it’s Children Day with those ages 6-12 admitted at a reduced price. Kids five and under are always free.

Senior Citizen’s Day is Friday, Aug. 12 and Veterans’s Day is Saturday, Aug. 13.

Seniors 55 and older receive a reduced price admission on Friday as do veterans on Saturday.

Also featured are arts and crafts and other exhibits and Native American foods including the popular fry bread.

The Meskwaki Powwow Grounds are located three miles west of Tama on Tama County?Road E49 at Battleground Road.
