Arrest Report – Tama County Jail

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Jan. 13

Dean Thomas O’Regan, 56, of Marion was arrested by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for failure to appear in court. O’Regan was released the same day on conditions of a pre-trial release.

Jan. 14

Nathaniel James Moritz, 27, of Tama was arrested by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear in court.

Jan. 17

Byron Lee Moritz, 22 of Tama was arrested by Tama Police for possession of drug paraphernalia and on a warrant for failure to appear in court.

Derek J. Hutchinson was arrested by Tama Police for domestic assault (impeding air/blood flow) and for interfering with official acts.

Jan. 18

Melissa Ann Workman, 42, of Gladbrook was arrested by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant.

Horace Wallace, 44, of Lafolette, Tenn. was arrested by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office for violation of probation.

Ashanti Renea Rinehart, 18, of Garwin was arrested by the Tama County Sheriff’s Office for OWI (2nd offense), two counts of child endangerment (no injury), driving with a license that is denied/revoked and two counts of domestic abuse assault. Rinehart was released on Jan. 19 on conditions of a pre-trial release.

Jan. 19

Drew Alan Mathes, 37, of Tama was arrested on a warrant for domestic assault (choking/bodily injury), obstruction of emergency communication, willful injury (bodily injury), 1st degree harassment and false imprisonment. Mathes was released on Jan. 20 on bond.

COURT NEWS

Derek J. Hutchinson, 32, of Tama appeared in custody on Jan. 18 in district court on charges including one count of domestic abuse assault impeding flow of air/blood (aggravated misdemeanor) and one count of interference with official acts-bodily injury (serious misdemeanor). Charges stem from an incident that took place on Jan. 17 at Hutchinson’s residence in Tama. According to the criminal complaint, Hutchinson is alleged to have pulled the victim’s hair before proceeding to grab the victim by the neck. The victim fought back and Hutchinson allegedly fled the home to a property directly south. The Tama Police Dept. responded and Hutchinson allegedly ran from the responding officer and refused all commands. After allegedly attempting to flee again, a taser was successfully deployed and Hutchinson was detained. Hutchinson was held on cash or surety bond in the amount of $2,000. A no contact order was issued by the court for the victim in the case. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 28, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. Hutchinson is being represented by the State Public Defender Office.

Mary Alice Mitchell, 43, with a listed address of Cedar Rapids entered a written plea in district court on Jan. 20 of guilty to Count 4: possession of a firearm or offensive weapon by a felon, a Class D felony, withdrawing her previous not guilty plea. On Oct. 28, 2021, Mitchell plead not guilty to seven counts of possession of a firearm or offensive weapon by a felon. Charges stem from an incident that took place at a residence in Traer on Sept. 2, 2021. On that date, the Tama County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the residence for a suicidal male. According to the criminal complaint, the reporting party was Mitchell who stated that there were guns in the house. The criminal complaint further states that Mitchell lived at the Traer residence to which deputies were dispatched. Mitchell is a convicted felon in the State of Iowa having previously been convicted of/received a deferred judgment for the crime of forgery, a felony, on June 5, 2008. Sentencing in the current case is set for March 17, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. A Class D felony carries fines of up to $10,245.00. Mitchell is represented by attorney Eric Ralph Eshelman of Ankeny.
