January is Radon Awareness Month
The World Health Organization has released their mortality statistics for 2010 and a startling statistic about in-home causes of death surfaced. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Radon Gas causes over 20,000 deaths annually in the United States.
To put that into perspective, Radon caused more deaths in 2010 than drunk driving, fires, and carbon monoxide.
Radon problems have been detected in almost every county in the United States. The Surgeon General and American Lung Association have also taken action to help prevent these needless deaths by recommending that all homes in the U.S. be tested regardless of geographic location or foundation type.
One of the best ways to protect our families’ health is to get radon gas out of our homes. It’s the environmentally responsible choice that can help reduce lung cancer. Since radon enters homes from under the ground, living healthy and green starts from the ground up. By kicking radon out of homes every family can have safer, healthier air to breathe.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends:
•Test your home for radon — it’s easy and inexpensive.
•Fix your home if your radon level is 4 picocuries per liter, or pCi/L, or higher.
•Radon levels less than 4 pCi/L still pose a risk, and in many cases may be reduced.
