tamatoledonews.com – DES MOINES – Governor Chet Culver has appointed David Worley as Commandant of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Worley’s term begins August 1, 2010.

I am confident his extensive background in veterans’ issues such as homelessness, housing and nursing home care will be assets as he serves as the Iowa Veterans Home Commandant,” Governor Culver said. “David has an outstanding record of fighting for veterans, which matches the Culver/Judge Administration’s commitment to supporting those who bravely served our country. I look forward to working with David to continue to ensure that our veterans get the superior care they deserve.”

Originally from Baltimore, Md., Worley entered the U.S. Army at age 19. A veteran of numerous conflicts, he served in several positions in Airborne and Special Operations units. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star and the U.S. Army Jumpmaster Badge. After the military, Worley earned a bachelor’s degree in social science education from Fayetteville State University and a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Louisville, and taught at the high school level.

Worley has served the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs as a Veterans Benefit Field Representative, director of the Homeless Veterans program, manager for the Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Honors Branch, and executive director of the Office of Kentucky Veterans Centers, where he supervised operations at that state’s three nursing homes for veterans. He created Kentucky’s Homeless Veterans Trust Fund, which assists veterans in making a smooth transition back into society. Worley served as chair of Kentucky’s Interagency Council for the Homeless, which advises the governor and the legislature on homelessness and housing issues. He currently chairs the Governor’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund Advisory Committee in Kentucky. His wife, Angela, serves in the U.S. Army.
