Brian Burnside New head of Marshalltown hospital

TAMA NEWS-HERALD – MARSHALLTOWN (SPECIAL) – The Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Brian D. Burnside, FACHE has been named the organization’s next President & Chief Executive Officer. Burnside is an experienced and respected healthcare professional with more than 13 years of extensive experience in the management of hospitals and multi-hospital healthcare systems.

“Brian’s knowledge of healthcare, his commitment to quality, and dedication to building positive working relationships with physicians and employees to provide the highest level of patient care are what we are looking for in a CEO,” said Gregg Sharp, President of the MMSC Board of Trustees. “His proven track record of accomplishments makes him an ideal choice to lead the already strong MMSC team.”

Burnside has been selected by the board to replace Rob Cooper, who announced his retirement in November of 2009. Sharp states: “We are confident in Brian’s ability to build on the outstanding leadership that La Rae Schelling, Interim CEO, and Bob Downey, CFO have provided the hospital since Rob’s retirement.”

“My wife, Natalie, and I are thrilled to be joining the Marshalltown community,” Burnside said. “During our recent visits, we experienced a very warm and genuine reception from everyone we met. I am excited about the opportunity to work with the MMSC Board of Directors, medical staff, employees, volunteers and community ceaders to further the hospital’s momentum into the future,” said Burnside.

“Together, we will continue to enhance and expand healthcare services to meet the needs of the citizens we serve, ” Burside said.

Burnside comes to MMSC from Wayne County Hospital (WCH) in Corydon, Iowa, where he has served as Chief Executive Officer since 2005. Prior to that he served as Chief Operating Officer at Moberly Regional Medical Center in Moberly, Mo. His progressive career experiences also include executive positions at Gateway Regional Medical Center a 327 bed hospital in Granite City,

Illinois and St. Anthony’s Medical Center a 567 bed urban medical center in St. Louis, Mo.

Wayne County Hospital has experienced extraordinary success under Burnside’s leadership. Asignificant financial turnaround led to the completion of a $7.2 million Renovation & Modernization of the entire facility. This project included the expansion of the Emergency Department, remodeling of Radiology and Laboratory Departments, and the expansion of the patient wing to include private patient rooms. Simultaneously, the organization successfully implemented an Electronic Medical Record system and other modern clinical technologies. Mr. Burnside and his team also successfully recruited five new physicians to this rural community. Most impressively, the organization’s patient satisfaction

scores have been measured in the 99th percentile nationwide leading to its receipt of the coveted “Press-Ganey Summit Award” in 2009. The success of the WCH team caused the Iowa Hospital Association to present Brian with its “Young Executive Achievement Award” in 2009.

Burnside holds a Masters in Health Services Administration as well as a Masters in Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio and a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Finance from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Burnside will be accompanied by his wife, Natalie and their two sons, Aidan and Preston. The Burnside’s are expecting their third child in May. He will begin his duties at MMSC in April.
