GRINNELL — The STC girls tennis team wrapped up their season this past week, when they competed at both the individual and team regionals.
Traveling to Grinnell on Wednesday, Sept. 23, the Trojans started the week with the individual regionals. Looking to get to the state tennis meet, Trojan head coach Steve Bearden noted the difficulty of qualifying.
“It’s so tough to advance to the state meet,” Bearden said. “Of the 54 players today, only six advance — two in singles and four in doubles.”
Playing in #1 singles, STC senior Mady Boriskey fell in her first match of the day, 6-4 and 6-1, to Grundy Center’s Ashlynn Draper. Afterwards, Bearden reflected on Boriskey’s career as a Trojan.
“I am so proud of Mady and the career she has had. She has handled the pressure of being #1 for two seasons now. I can’t be more thankful for what she has given to our program,” he said.

In other singles play, Trojan junior Presley Vest dropped her match, 6-1 and 6-1, to Central Dewitt’s Kaelyn Denahy, who came into the meet as the #3 seeded player.
In doubles play, the Trojan team of senior Grace Gomez and junior Ava Boldt dropped their match to Grundy Center, 6-4 and 6-4. The second STC team to compete, freshman Bralynn Rohrs and sophomore Kendra Svacina, fell to South Hardin by an identical score: 6-4, 6-4.
Following the individual regionals, STC traveled to Cedar Rapids three days later, on Saturday, September 26, to compete at the team regionals. Facing Cedar Rapids Xavier, who traditionally has a strong program, the Trojans dropped their six singles matches on the day. The lineup for the Trojans included: Boriskey (#1), Boldt (#2), Vest (#3), Gomez (#4), Rohrs (#5), and sophomore Amilia Bullshoe (#6).
After the week’s competition, Bearden took time to recognize Gomez, another one of the program’s seniors.
“Grace has been a mainstay for the program for four years. It has been an honor to see her grow as a player,” he said.

The week’s regional competitions brought the 2026 season to an end for the Trojans. Finishing with a season record of 1-8, the highlight of the fall was the teams’ 5-4 victory over Nevada on Monday, Aug. 24.
