WATERLOO — The STC girls tennis program placed fifth as a team, and earned two fourth place finishes, on Thursday, Sept. 17, when they competed at the annual WaMaC conference meet.

It was an unusual and taxing day for the Trojans, who were originally scheduled to compete in Independence. But when rain delayed the start for an hour and a half, officials decided to have teams travel 30 miles west to Waterloo to pick up the action at UNI’s indoor tennis center. Then, when the weather cleared, teams were asked to move the play back outdoors, a mile south, to Byrnes Park.

After the teams endured the day, STC’s highest individual finish was from junior Presley Vest, who earned fourth in the #3 singles position. Senior Mady Boriskey (#1), junior Ava Boldt (#2), senior Grace Gomez (#4), sophomore Kendra Svacina (#5), and freshman Bralynn Rohrs (#6) all earned fifth place finishes in singles play for the Trojans.

In doubles action, the team of Svacina and Rohrs earned fourth place, after an opening round victory, 8-4, over Marion’s Brynlee Helverson and Adde Stark. Boriskey and Boldt (#1), and Vest and Gomez (#2) both finished in fifth place for STC.

“Today was exhausting,” said Trojan head coach Steve Bearden on social media after the meet. “I’m proud of the focus and stamina showed by our team. We competed well despite the adversity. Every time we step on the court, we gain experience and grow our skills.”

Following the WaMaC meet, the Trojans were scheduled to enter the postseason this past week, with Individual Regionals on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Grinnell. Team Regionals will take place on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Cedar Rapids Xavier.
