Girls compete at WaMaC Indoor

GRINNELL — The STC girls track and field team had a solid performance at the annual WaMaC conference on Tuesday, March 24, in Grinnell. Head coach Emily Chyma and the squad earned multiple top-10 performances in their final indoor meet of the season.
The Trojans were led by sophomore Scout Ridout, who grabbed runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles and third place in the 200. Ridout ran a personal-best time of 9.36 in the 60-meter hurdles, just getting passed by West Delaware’s Avery Schmitz, who won with a time of 9.34. Ridout ran another personal-best in the 200, with a time of 27.30. Her third place finish was impressive in a crowded field of 55 runners.
Other top-10 finishes for STC included their distance medley team of Ridout, sophomore Maylee Rucker, senior Naomi Peshel, and junior Livia Smith. The foursome ran a time of 5:18.27 to finish in 8th place. Senior Autumn Elsbury finished in 8th place in the shot put with a top throw of 30 feet, 8 inches. And Rucker earned 9th place in the high jump with a jump of 4-8.
Two other relay teams earned top-20 finishes for STC. These included the 4×200 team of sophomores Sydney Arp, Cahysia Kapayou, Brylee Nelson, and Jayva Gomez (13th, 1:56.89); and the 4×400 team of junior Olivia Bradley, senior Madeline Paxton, Smith, and Peshel (16th, 5:03.35). The Trojans also gained a 14th place finish from freshman Nova Carr in the 1500. Carr finished with a time of 6:06.
Up next for the girls track and field team is the STC Early Bird Invite on Tuesday, April 7. The meet will begin at 4:30 at the STC High School track.
