Three Trojans earn WaMaC honors

Three players from the STC boys basketball team were honored by the WaMaC conference for their play this winter. Seniors Cyrell Etzen, Tanner Large, and Barrett Jesina all earned recognition in the WaMaC western division when the honors were released on Tuesday, March 3.
The Trojans were led by Etzen, who received a spot on the all-WaMaC second team. Etzen led STC in several statistical categories this season, including: points (228), rebounds (130), steals (32), three-pointers made (24), and free-throw percentage (65%). He was also second on the team in assists (39) and fourth in field goal percentage (42%).
Large was named to the WaMaC honorable mention team. He was the Trojan’s leader in assists on the season with 83. Large was also third in points (196), fourth in rebounds (73), second in steals (30), second in free-throw percentage (64%), and finished tied for third in three-pointers made (13).
Joining Large in receiving honorable mention was Jesina. He finished second on the team this season in several statistical categories, including: points (213), rebounds (99), three-pointers made (15), and field goal percentage (43%). Jesina also finished third in steals (24), fourth in free-throw percentage (47%), and fifth in assists (15).
STC competes in the WaMaC western division, which makes up half of the total conference. The western division includes: STC, Benton, Clear Creek-Amana, Grinnell, Vinton-Shellsburg, and Williamsburg. Junior Beckett Bosset of Clear Creek-Amana was honored as the western division player of the year. Clear Creek-Amana won the WaMaC west with a conference record of 9-1.

The Trojans finished this season with a record of 3-19 under head coach Craig Harrison.
It was the most victories for the program since the 2023-2024 season when they went 8-14. STC finished with victories over Williamsburg, Meskwaki, and Perry. The Trojans lost to Solon, 74-43, in the first round of the class 3A playoffs on Monday, February 23. Solon went on to qualify for this week’s boys state basketball tournament in Des Moines with a record of 23-2.
