VINTON — The STC girls basketball team traveled to Vinton-Shellsburg on Tuesday, Jan. 27, looking for their fifth win of the season. Incredibly, the Vikettes managed only three field goals the entire game, and the Trojans rolled over V-S, 42-12.

After a cold start for both teams, sophomore Scout Ridout got STC on the scoreboard after a steal and a layup. With balanced scoring in the first quarter from junior Olivia Hala, and sophomores Ridout, Stella Zmolek, Dyan Keahna, and Cahysia Kapayou, the Trojans held a 10-2 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.

When Keahna hit a 3-point basket midway through the second quarter, STC had extended their lead to 19-6. At the halftime break, the Trojans led 19-8, having held Vinton to two field goals and four free-throws in the half.

In the second half, STC outscored the Vikettes, 23-4. Poor shooting and a stifling Trojan defense allowed Vinton to score a total of one basket in the entire second half, along with two free-throws. Six second half points by Kapayou helped the Trojans to pull away to the 42-12 final.

On the night, the Trojans were led in scoring by Kapayou with 10 points. Keahna (nine points), Hala (eight points), Scout Ridout (seven points), Zmolek (six points), and Rylee Ridout (two points) rounded out the scoring for STC. Zmolek led the game in rebounding (11), while Rylee Ridout tallied eight steals. V-S (0-17) committed 31 turnovers in the contest.
