Trojan boys earn second win of season

The STC boys basketball team beat Meskwaki Settlement, 67-47, on Monday, Jan. 19, to earn their second victory of the season.

The Trojans jumped out to an 18-6 lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks to 8 points from senior Tanner Large. Senior Cyrell Etzen got hot in the second quarter for the Trojans, scoring 7 of his game high 17 points. A near full-court 3-point heave by Warrior sophomore Layne Steuhm gave Meskwaki momentum at the halftime buzzer but STC took a commanding 35-17 lead at the break.

As STC came out of the locker room, they received 6 points from both senior Barrett Jesina and sophomore Ryan Brant to build their lead to 60-26 at the end of the third quarter. Meskwaki outscored STC 21-7 in the fourth quarter but the Trojans had built a commanding lead to put the final tally at 67-47.

On the night, STC was balanced in scoring, led by Etzen with 17 points. The only other Trojan in double figures was Jesina with 10 points. STC also received scoring from: Large (8), Brant (8), senior Marion Harris (6), senior Chayton Etzen (5), senior Wes Hanus (4), sophomore Corbin Shuchahosee (3), junior Josiah Houghton (2), junior Ayden Wobeter (2), and junior Lane Feisel (2).

Up next for the Trojans (2-11) is a game on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at Grinnell. This will be followed by a home game against Clear Creek Amana on Friday, Feb. 6; and a trip to Le Grand to play East Marshall on Monday, Feb. 9.
