Girls wrestlers take championship at BGM

BROOKLYN — The STC girls wrestling team won their third team championship of the season on Saturday, Jan. 3. Taking first place at the BGM Holiday Brawl in Brooklyn, the Trojans crowned five individual champions along the way.

Junior Livia Smith (100 lbs.), senior Ava Hendricks (115 lbs.), junior Paisley Bro (145 lbs.), senior Autumn Elsbury (170 lbs.) and junior Kinley Jimenez (235 lbs.) all won their weight classes for STC. With their performances on the day, Smith (24-2), Hendricks (22-7), and Elsbury (22-3) all pushed their season record over 20 wins.

Finishing in the runner-up position for the Trojans at BGM were: sophomore Jayva Gomez (110 lbs.), freshman Miyah Grabenbaur (120 lbs.), freshman Gianna Boswell (130 lbs.), junior Ava Perkins (135 lbs.), and sophomore Maylee Rucker (140 lbs.).

Two Trojans finished in third place on the podium. These included: sophomore Isabela Saban Perez (105 lbs.) and junior Brooklyn Mitchell (130 lbs.). With their second and third place finishes respectively, Rucker (21-5) and Mitchell (25-8) also stand at 20+ wins on the season.

Securing top-five finishes for STC at Brooklyn were: freshman Abigail Hendricks (100 lbs., 4th place); junior Alyssa Kriegel (110 lbs., 5th place); junior London Jaennette (125 lbs., 4th place); freshman Layla Webb (125 lbs., 5th place); and sophomore Decorah Walker (135 lbs., 4th place).

STC dominated the meet and won with 236.5 points — an impressive 95.5 points ahead of second place South Winneshiek (141). Sigourney-Keota finished in third place with 134 points.

Up next for the Trojans is a trip to Ogden for the Ogden Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 10. This will be followed by a home Double Dual against Independence and Williamsburg on Thursday, Jan. 15.
