Boys wrestling places 3rd at BGM

BROOKLYN — The STC boys wrestling team placed third at the BGM Holiday Brawl Duals on Saturday, Jan. 3. The Trojans finished 3-2 on the day, with wins over Moravia (60-18), BGM (64-18), and Baxter (72-6). STC dropped matches to South Winneshiek (37-33) and Louisa-Muscatine (61-16).

During the day’s competition, STC senior Marcus Bear went 3-1, with wins over Sully Thompson of BGM (fall, 2:19); Maddox Peters of Baxter (fall, 3:28); and Kolton Brockert of Louisa-Muscatine (fall, 3:14). Within his victories, Bear notched his 100th win in his storied career with the Trojans.

STC’s most complete performance of the day came with their victory over Moravia. The Trojans won 8 out of 10 matches, while also receiving 3 forfeits. Bear, freshman Nolan Arp, and freshman Bryan Lopez-Solis scored the forfeit points for the Trojans. Victories for STC were secured by: sophomore Henri Martinez-Alvarado (120 lbs.); freshman Israel Zamarron-Acosta (126 lbs.); sophomore Izak Schroeder (132 lbs.); junior Eli Cruikshank (138 lbs.); freshman Jet Chyma (144 lbs.); junior Kyle Youngbear (190 lbs.); junior Manny Cervantes (215 lbs.); and sophomore Lakyr Peska (285 lbs.).

STC’s third place finish came behind South Winneshiek and Louisa-Muscatine. BGM (4th), Moravia (5th), and Baxter (6th) rounded out the final standings.

Up next for the Trojan boys wrestlers is the PCM Invite on Saturday, Jan. 10, at Monroe. This will be followed by a home Double Dual on Thursday, Jan. 15, against Independence and Williamsburg.
