Girls take second place at CR Prairie

CEDAR RAPIDS — The STC girls wrestling team finished in second place at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invite on Saturday, Dec. 20, crowning two individual champions along the way.

Both junior Livia Smith (100 lbs.) and senior Autumn Elsbury (170 lbs.) won their weight class for the Trojans. Smith defeated Western Dubuque’s Elli Casey by fall at the 3:07 mark to win the championship. For Smith, it was the second time in twelve days that she won her weight class at an invitational. She earned first place at the Williamsburg Raider Invite on December 8. Smith goes into the Christmas break with a 19-2 record.

Elsbury took the crown at 170 with a win by decision over Western Dubuque’s Ava Pfab. Elsbury, the reigning state champion at 170, goes into the break with a record of 19-3.

STC also earned six top-five finishes. They were led by sophomore Maylee Rucker, who earned 2nd place finish at 140 lbs. Sophomore Jayva Gomez (110 lbs.), junior Ava Perkins (135 lbs.), and junior Paisley Bro (145 lbs.) all earned 4th place finishes. Senior Ava Hendricks (115 lbs.) and junior Brooklyn Mitchell (130 lbs.) both earned 5th place finishes.

The Trojans’ scoring was rounded out by a 6th place finish by junior London Jaennette (125 lbs.), and a seventh place finish by sophomore Isabela Saban Perez (105 lbs.).

STC finished in a second place tie with Cedar Rapids Prairie, who both ended the Invite with 176 points. Linn-Mar was crowned the team champion with a slightly higher total of 184 points. Williamsburg (110) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (108) rounded out the top five in the team rankings.

Following the Christmas break, the Trojans will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3, at the BGM Holiday Brawl in Brooklyn. They will, then, return home on Thursday, Jan. 8, for the STC Double Dual against Marion and West Delaware.
