The STC girls basketball team gained their first victory of the young season on Tuesday night, Dec. 2. Defeating Saydel at the STC high school gym, the Trojans were also able to secure the first victory for first-year head coach Laura Ridout.
STC raced out to a quick 7-0 lead behind a stifling full-court press and early baskets by junior Olivia Hala, sophomore Scout Ridout, and sophomore Cahysia Kapayou. After sophomore Dyan Keahna drilled a 3-point basket, the Trojans took a commanding 13-1 lead in the first quarter. STC continued to extend their lead, as first-half scoring by Keahna (8 points) and Hala (7 points) helped give the Trojans a 28-14 halftime lead.
Ridout came out of the locker room on a hot-streak and scored most of her 11 points on the night in the 3rd quarter. A strong defensive performance by the Trojans held the Eagels to just 10 second half points. Combined with a game-high 21 points from Keahna, STC rolled to a dominating 54-24 victory.
Keahna’s 21 points led the Trojans in scoring. She was followed by Ridout (11 points) and Hala (7 points). STC also received scoring from Kapayou, senior Rylee Ridout, sophomore Stella Zmolek, sophomore Paityn Yuska, and senior Paige Croskey.
Next up for the STC girls basketball team (1-1) is a trip to Union on Monday, Dec. 8, to face the Knights in La Porte City. The Trojans’ next home game will be on Friday, Dec. 12, against West Delaware.
