STC XC competes at Newton Invite

NEWTON — The STC cross country team traveled to Newton on Tuesday, Sept. 23, to compete at the 49th annual Newton Invite.
The boys squad was once again led by senior Barrett Jesina, who finished in third place for the Trojans. Running a time of 17:13, Jesina finished behind winner Isaac Rankin of Knoxville (17:00) and Cadel Conner of Grinnell (17:05). Sophomore Brady Jesina finished next for STC, coming in 33rd place with a time of 20:23. Close behind was freshman Max Schirmer (39th place; 20:38). The Trojans were rounded out by senior Jovanie Perez (48th place; 21:47), freshman Riley Stubbs (50th place; 22:57), freshman Kyler Johnson (53rd place; 25:23), and freshman Nolan Arp (54th place; 28:03). STC finished in 8th place as a team. Grinnell won the meet (35 points), followed by ADM (49 points) and Newton (114 points).
The STC girls team entered three runners in the Invite. Leading the way for the girls was sophomore Jayva Gomez, who finished in 31st place (28:49). She was followed by junior Livia Smith (33rd place, 29:37) and sophomore Cahysia Kapayou (34th place, 30:45).
Up next for the Trojan cross country team is a trip to Eldora on Saturday, Oct. 4 for the South Hardin Invite. Following that, STC will travel to Montezuma for the Montezuma Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 9.
