STC girls tennis competes at conference meet

The STC girls tennis team traveled to Mount Vernon on Thursday, September 11, for the annual WaMaC Conference tennis meet. After a morning of tough competition, the Trojans finished in fifth place as a team and had several strong individual and doubles performances.
STC’s efforts were highlighted by a 4th place finish by the team of junior Madyson Boriskey and sophomore Ava Boldt in #1 doubles play. Boriskey and Boldt advanced to the semifinals by defeating the team from Marion, 9-8, in a match that was decided by a tiebreaker. Broiskey and Boldt dropped their semifinal match to #1 seeded Independence, and went on to earn 4th place after they fell to Grinnell in the 3rd place match.
Boriskey also competed in #1 singles play and advanced to the quarterfinals, where she faced Marion’s Kennedy Barnhart. After Barnhart jumped out to a 6-2 lead, Boriskey battled all the way back to draw within a score of 6-5. But the Wolves’ Barnhart grabbed the last two games and defeated Boriskey by a final score of 8-5. Boldt competed in #2 singles play for the Trojans and fell to Marion’s Macie Johnson, 8-2.
In other singles action, STC junior Grace Gomez competed in #3 singles and dropped her match to Marion’s Maddie Vanpelt, 8-1. Other singles results included: Mount Vernon’s Tallulah Norton over STC sophomore Presley Vest, 8-2 (#4 singles); Grinnell’s Izzy Boyer over STC freshman Cate Hardon, 8-0 (#5 singles); and Marion’s Anna Shelton over STC freshman Amilia Bullshoe, 8-1 (#6 singles).
In remaining doubles play, Gomez and Hardon teamed up in #2 doubles and fell to the team of Macie Johndon and Allie Spencer of Marion, 8-0. In #3 doubles, STC’s Vest and Bullshoe hung tough in their match against Marion’s Clara Heller and Brynlee Halverson. But Vest and Bullshoe eventually dropped their match 8-3.
The STC girls tennis team will now turn their attention to Individual Regional competition. That will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Grinnell.
