This past Monday night, June 30, was a special night at the STC softball complex. On a night when STC hosted #3 ranked Mount Vernon for a doubleheader, it was ‘Alumni Night’ — where STC honored all past alumni of the softball program. This year marked the 50th season of South Tama softball and the inaugural team of 1975 was especially honored. Eight members of the team were recognized in between games of the doubleheader for their unique place in STC history. Among those in attendance from the ’75 team were: Kathy Arp, Cat Campbell Currier, Becky Zhorne, Dawn Hoskey, Cindy Walton Noll, Vicki Ferriss-Adams, Janet Berger, and Diane Burns. After a warm round of applause from the crowd, the ’75 team took time to pose for pictures with the current Trojan team and the other softball alumni in attendance.

This year’s version of Trojan softball had a hard task in front of them on the night. The #3 Mustangs dominated game #1 of the doubleheader, running away to a 22-0 win in four innings. The Mustangs scored 10 runs in the first inning and put up multiple runs in each of the next 3 innings. The Trojans were held hitless and without a base runner in the four innings, as Mustang sophomore pitcher Hayden Gookin shut down the STC offense.

The second game was more competitive for STC. The Trojans put up a run in the bottom of the third inning when freshman Shelby Johannsen doubled and drove in freshman Sydney Arp. But once again the Mustangs were too much and pulled away for an 8-1 victory.

Up next for the STC softball team (1-21) is a home varsity matchup against Union on Tuesday, July 8, at 7:00 p.m. It will be the final regular season game for the Trojans.

Following that, STC will begin postseason play. The Trojans will travel to West Liberty on Thursday night, July 10, to face the West Liberty Comets. That contest will also begin at 7 p.m.
