STC JV baseball drops season-opening games

This past week, the STC baseball team started another season of competition under new head coach Dave Nitz. Playing exclusively JV games this summer, the Trojans dropped their opening contests to Williamsburg and GMG.

On Thursday, May 22, STC traveled to face Williamsburg for a double-header on the Raider’s home diamond. After the Trojans dropped game one by a score of 4-1, Williamsburg jumped on the Trojans early in game two. The Raiders pulled away to a 12-0 win in a shortened, 3 inning game. STC sophomore Cameron Birch logged the most pitching in the game for the Trojans. Birch pitched 1 1/3 innings while striking out two batters and only giving up one hit.

Freshman Logan Graff and incoming freshman Kaeson Davenport also threw for the Trojans. Graff struck out two, while Davenport struck out three batters. On the offensive side, Birch, freshman Jonas Sheetz, and incoming-freshman Brayden Wiese and Hayden Gates all collected hits for the Trojans.

Following the opening loss to Williamsburg, the Trojans played their first home game of the season when they hosted the GMG Wolverines on Friday, May 23. In a much more competitive, back-and-forth game, the Wolverines came out on top by a score of 15-9. Sophomore Michael Henry led the way for STC on the night. Henry went 2-4 at the plate with one RBI, four runs scored, and two stolen bases. Henry also pitched 1 2/3 innings for the Trojans, giving up zero earned runs and notching five strikeouts.

Davenport pitched three innings and tallied an impressive seven strikeouts. Davenport also contributed a hit and a run scored on offense. Other offensive contributors included Graff (1-2, 1 run, 1 RBI), Sheetz (2 RBIs), Birch (1-3, 2 RBIs), and incoming-freshman Grant Dolezal (1-3). In the loss, the Trojans tallied a total of nine runs, six hits, and four stolen bases. Hurting the Trojans on the night were six runners left on base and five errors.

Next up for the JV baseball team is a home game against East Marshall on Monday, June 2. This will be followed by another home contest against Union on Monday, June 9.
