Trojan alums see collegiate success

Area collegiates compete at American Rivers Conference Track and Field Meet

Indianola — Over the past five years, South Tama has seen record numbers of athletes continuing their careers in the collegiate ranks. Over the weekend four STC track and field alums competed at the American Rivers Conference track and field championships hosted at Simpson College in Indianola.

James Brant, running for Central College, showed off his mid-distance specialties with a 14th place finish in the 800 meter run, with a time of 1:58.09. Brant also contributed to the Dutch’s 4×800 meter relay team, which placed 7th in a time of 8:08.07.

2018 3A high jump state champion, who just completed his graduate studies at the University of Dubuque, ended his jumping career at the meet. Jumping 5’8.5 Keahna will call it a career with a 17th place finish. Unfortunately for the former Hawkeye, a ruptured left patella tendon was sustained during the competition and will require surgery to fix.

Keeping it in the family, Eli Keahna competed for Wartburg in various throwing disciplines. In his best performance, Eli landed a 46’11.75ft shot put heave finishing him in 13th. In the discus, 134’05 was enough for a 14th place finish. In the hammer throw Keahna finished 21st with 135’10.

Being the busiest of the South Tama alumni, JoJo Tyynismaa saw success in four events, not finishing any lower than second place. Tyynismaa won the 400 meter dash in a time of 55.48, as well as contributing to Wartburg’s winning 4×400 relay. The quartet of Knights finished in 3:50.29. In the 200, JoJo was the runner up in 24.67, as well as being a part of the 4×100 also finishing in second place with a time of 47.09 seconds.

A successful weekend of track and field for STC graduates from 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2024, showing Tama’s tradition of TnF excellence.
