Someone may need to inform the weather that baseball players around Iowa are ready to play. The South Tama baseball team hosted their season opener against East Marshall on Monday, May 22.

The night began with the Marshalltown men’s chorus performing the National Anthem, following the final note it was time to play ball.

The Trojans batting lineup for the evening was Colton Vest, Cam Klostermann, Lane Koch, Carter Kriegel, Cael Kellogg, Rian Simpson, Kaiden Buffalo, Jonah Bearden and Nick Ryan. Pitching for the Trojans was Bearden and Wilkerson.

South Tama scored a run in the 2nd inning, 2 in the 3rd and 3 in the 4th with Vest scoring 2 runs, Klostermann 1, Ryan 1, Tanner Walz 1 and Jackson Beltz. Vest and Kriegel each had an RBI.

The weather cut the game short but the teams got in enough innings for the Trojans to secure a 6-2 over the East Marshall Mustangs. The following night the Trojans were scheduled to host PCM but the wet conditions of the field caused a cancelation. South Tama was on the road Friday evening for a WaMaC conference double header with Central DeWitt. The Trojans will host Benton on Tuesday, May 30.

IHSAA Pitch Count

Policy

New this season is the IHSAA Pitch Count Policy. Coaches must now keep a running count on any given night of a pitcher’s pitch count. Depending on the count determines the amount of rest required between games. Rest time is as follows for 8th -12th graders 1-25 pitches, no rest; 8th-12th graders 26-40 pitches, 1 day rest; 8th-12th graders 41-65 pitches, 2 days rest; 8th-12th graders 66-90 pitches, 3 days rest and 10th-12th graders 91-110 pitches, 4 days rest. When the pitcher reaches 110 pitches, he may not pitch to another batter. He may only finish pitching to the current batter. If an individual were to pitch on consecutive days, the two or more day total would determine how many days of rest would be required before the individual could return to pitch. The consecutive day total cannot exceed 110 pitches. 10th 12th graders may throw 180 pitches in a week. 8th-9th graders may throw 150 pitches in a week. A week is defined as Sunday-Saturday. If an individual were to throw 25 or fewer pitches in game one of a doubleheader, he may return to pitch in game two, up to 110 pitches for the day. If an individual were to throw more than 25 pitches in game one of a doubleheader, he would be ineligible to pitch in game two. An adult designee from both teams approved by the school will confirm the pitch count of each pitcher at the completion of each inning. If there is a discrepancy that cannot be worked out, the home scorebook/count will be considered the official count.

All varsity pitch counts are required to be entered into QuikStats within 24 hours of the completion of the game. All levels of baseball (freshman, JV, varsity, etc.) are required to complete the IHSAA Pitch Count Chart and both schools’ coaches are required to verify and sign said chart at the conclusion of the contest.
