STC girls tennis flexes muscle at N. Polk Invite

The STC Girls Tennis Team traveled to the North Polk Invite on Saturday, April 15 and walked away with four medals. South Tama put both of its doubles teams in the final as they dominated play on the day.

Serena Lowe and Abbie Morgan placed first in Pool A by losing just two games. The quickly improving duo from STC notched a 10-2 win over Saydel’s Megan Schmidt and Darian Garcia in their first match. In their second match, they blanked North Polk’s Emma Mackey and Olivia Hanlon by a score of 10-0.

Playing in their first matches as partners, South Tama’s Laura Fernandez and Danae Cleppe made the most of their debut. They defeated North Polk’s Rio Monk and Keely McFarlin 10-4 in their first match. In round two, Fernandez and Cleppe bageled Chelsea Abrams and Margarita Valdez of Saydel 10-0.

In the championship match, South Tama’s Lowe/Morgan faced teammates Fernandez/Cleppe. Winning 10-5, Lowe/Morgan claimed the first place medals. Fernandez/Cleppe grabbed the second place medals after finishing the day with a 2-1 record.

In singles play, Senior Brycelyn Haughey finished in fourth place. She played a solid match against North Polk’s Grace Nelson before falling 5-10. Haughey bounced back to play inspired tennis in her second round win over Saydel’s Riley Backus 10-3. Saydel’s Katie Schmidt defeated Haughey 1-10 in the third place match. Haughey finished in fourth place with a 1-2 record on the day.

Senior Courtney Anderson dropped her first match against Saydel’s Katie Schmidt 1-10. North Polk’s Chloe Laizure pinned a 2-10 loss on Anderson in the next round. Anderson claimed fifth place as she defeated Saydel’s Riley Backus 10-5 in her final match.
