The STC Girls Tennis Team put together a near perfect night when they hosted Maquoketa on Monday, April 11. The Trojans secured an 8-1 victory in varsity action and an 11-0 win in junior varsity play.

South Tama swept the singles matches to take a commanding lead in the dual meet. STC Senior Brycelyn Haughey got things started as she battled Delaney Clark at #1 Singles. Haughey raced to a 6-1 lead by utilizing her solid serve and all court play. Clark won three of the next five games, but it wasn’t enough as Haughey grabbed the 8-4 win to secure her first victory on the young season.

Junior Bri Nelson faced Lizzie Newell at #2 Singles. Nelson secured a 5-1 lead in the match by dictating play from the baseline. Newell showed some fight by winning three of five games; however, Nelson stood her ground and converted an 8-4 win for the Trojans. Courtney Anderson took on Kacie Varner at #3 Singles. Anderson proved she was in it to win it as she rushed to a 7-1 lead in the match. In the end, Anderson won comfortably 8-2.

Senior Laura Fernandez-Garcia faced Alysia Aise at #4 Singles. Aise put up little fight as Fernandez-Garcia notched an 8-2 win for South Tama. Senior Serena Lowe and Sophomore Abbie Morgan represented STC at #5 and #6 Singles. Lowe dominated in her match against Abi Barnes by not losing a game. Breaking her opponent’s serve four times while holding serve four times was a winning combination for Lowe as she won 8-0. Morgan grabbed her first win of the season as she outclassed Camryn Berg at #6 Singles. She refused to allow her opponent one game en route to an 8-0 victory.

Anderson/Fernandez-Garcia teamed at #2 Doubles for South Tama. They fell behind early against Varner/Aise by a score of 1-3. The duo from STC battled back to grab seven of the next nine games to secure an 8-5 victory. Lowe/Morgan made it a perfect night as they blitzed Barnes/Berg at #3 Doubles 8-0. Lowe/Morgan were a perfect 24-0 in games won on the night including singles and doubles matches.

Maquoketa nabbed their lone win on the night at #1 Doubles. Clark/Newell fell behind 4-7 against South Tama’s Haughey/Nelson before staging a comeback. Knotted at 8-8, the teams entered a tiebreaker to decide the contest. In a match this close, one point can make the difference in winning and losing. The visiting team got the break they needed to win the tiebreaker 8-6 and the match 9-8 (6).

South Tama was perfect in JV Doubles play as they recorded an 11-0 win over Maquoketa. STC notched wins by Danae Cleppe/Autumn McFate, Anna Glendy/Zoee Buffalo, Abby Buffalo/Anna Dvorak, Kennedy Adams/Ashley Thomazin, Queta Diego/Addie Romero, Alaria Harken/Skyler Steveson, Bailey Waldo/Kacee Hamor, Kaisha Struve/Alexes Baeza, Daniela Contreras/Briana Jensen, Jaika Purk/Allison Thomazin, and Hanah Novotny/Jordan VanDee.
