Lady Trojans take first at Montezuma Invite

For the third year in a row the Lady Trojans have dominated at the Montezuma Invite. The Trojans travelled to Montezuma on Thursday, October 6 to race at the Montezuma Country Club. Teams attending the meet included host team Montezuma, English Valleys, Belle Plaine, BGM, South Tama, North Mahaska, HLV, Keota, Twin Cedars, Pella Christian, Colfax-Mingo, Sigourney, and Moravia.
It was a cloudy day with temperatures peaking at 73 degrees. Rain held off until the very end of the evening when it began to sprinkle during the awards presentation. The country club course is quite possibly the hilliest course the Trojans see all season.
Cheyenne Shaw of North Mahaska was the overall winner for the girls varsity race.
As a team the Trojans took first place. Individually leading for the Trojans was Lauren Yuska who came in 4th with a time of 23:46. Following Yuska were 6th place Jensen Vodochodsky (23:58), 7th place Allison Yuska (24:22), 18th – Mahala Doyle (26:01), 30th – Mallory Thede (27:07), 37th – Shae Slaven (28:47), 45th – Minnie Climer (30:21) and 55th – Aleksandra Beha (33:33).
On the boys side Hunter Filloon came in 5th with a time of 19:08 followed by 12th – Chase Branan (20:09), 28th – Courage Tyon (21:10), 31st – Jair Sosa (21:24), 44th Joel Puentes (23:06) and 47th Daniel Mendoza (23:16).

Thursday’s meet was the third meet in seven days for the busy Trojan team. They had previously competed in Dike at the Wolverine Invitational on Tuesday, October 4 and also at the South Hardin Invitational on Saturday, October 1.
At Tuesday’s meet in Dike the Lady Trojans finished sixth as a team. Weather in Dike was partly cloudy with a high of 72 degrees. Leading the Trojans was freshman Callie Frakes who finished 15th with a time of 20:42 followed by 40th – Jensen Vodochodsky (22:03), 46 – Lauren Yuska (22:22), 47 – Allison Yuska (22:25), 59 – Kelsie York-Morris (22:46) and 99 – Mahala Doyle (24:29)

For JV girls Marisol Mora-Martizez led the Trojans with a 6th place finish (22:49) followed by 21st – Mallory Thede (24:48), 44th – Shae Slaven (26:55), 52nd – Minnie Climer (28:18) and 54th – Aleksandra Beha (29:36).
South Tama boys varsity finished 15th as a team at the Wolverine Invite. The Trojans were led by Hunter Filloon who took 25th with a time of 17:44 followed by 46th – Chase Branan (18:26), 78th – Courage Tyon (19:22), 88th – Jair Sosa (19:55) and 105th – Joel Puentes (21:22).

On Saturday, October 1 the STC cross country team was in Eldora for competition at Pine Lake Country Club. It was a brisk Saturday morning with temperatures reaching 62 degrees. The varsity girls team finished 2nd as a team. Leading the Trojans was Callie Frakes who finished 7th (22:26) followed by 14 – Lauren Yuska (23:25), 17 – Jensen Vodocohcsky (23:34), 22 – Allison Yuska (23:54), 26 – Kelsie York-Morris (24:19) and 38 – Mahala Doyle (25:42).

The JV girls team finished 4th. Marisol Mora led with her first 1st place finish of the season (24:58) followed by 2 – Mallory Thede (25:42), 11 – Shae Slaven (28:40), 18 – Aleksandra Beha (30:34) and 25 – Salma Razak (35:02).
For the STC boys the team finished 8th. Leading the Trojans was 12 – Hunter Filloon (189:44) followed by 34 – Chase Branan (19:48), 44 – Courage Tyon (20:30), 49 – Jair Sosa 21:02, 56 – Joel Puntes (22:13) an d62 – Nick Jordan (23:35).

The Trojans will travel to the Solon Nature Center Thursday for the WaMaC meet and following that will enter into the post season. South Tama has been assigned to Solon for the state qualifying district meet. That will take place on Thursday, October 20. At Districts South Tama will see 3rd ranked Mount Vernon-Lisbon, 7th ranked Marion, 12th ranked Clear Creek-Amana as well as Davenport Assumption, Central DeWitt, Fairfield, Keokuk, Maquoketa, Notre Dame/West Burlington, Solon, Washington, and Williamsburg. The State Meet will be held in Fort Dodge on Saturday, October 29.
