STC/EM girls soccer travel to DeWitt for season opener

The ST/EM girls soccer team traveled to DeWitt on Tuesday April 12, to start the season, taking on the #15 Central DeWitt team.

The team this year is young on experience with only 4 players seeing extended playing time from last year. The game started at 4:30 with Abby Llewellyn in goal. This is her first year in goal. Defensive line starters are Alyssa Patro, Carina Chavarria, Savanna Lopez and Katie Chyma. Midfielders starters are Keely Driscoll, Dani Stubbs, Emily Terrones, and Marilyn Anaya. Forward starters are Jade Baeza and Socorro Mendoza.

The game started with ST/EM having the ball. For the first 5 minutes, the play of the game was in the midfield as the teams got a feel for the game. Central DeWitt had the first solid attack but Abby was up to the challenge and stopped a hard shot. ST/EM mounted a counter attack but nothing became of it. Central DeWitt continued to press the attack but The ST/EM defense held, as Emily Terrones dropped back to help with shoring up the defense. In the 13th minute Central DeWitt finally scored on a breakaway, and a minute later Central DeWitt added a second goal on another breakaway. At the 15 minute mark ST/EM lost the services of Emily, and Central DeWitt took advantage of the inexperience of the ST/EM player and added 6 more goals before the half time horn.

The second half started the same and Central DeWitt added two more goals, at the 42 minute mark and 45 minute mark to end the game, 10-0 in favor of Central DeWitt.

The ST/EM player never gave up and played hard. The defense knows that they need to work on challenging for the ball sooner and learn to support and trust each other. Midfield play was better organized but need to continue to pass the ball quicker. This was a learning experience, and with two more games this week, the team will need to make adjustments.

The subs that played in the game were KyLee Hoskins, who did a good job in the defensive line. Taylor Hrabak played very well in the midfield filling in for Emily Terrones. Estrella Castellanos, Nyana Eubanks, Courtney Ceaser, and Autumn Papakee all contributed to the effort. Abby Llewelyn in goal had 12 saves. Central DeWitt had 5 corners for the game and ST/EM had 1 corner.
