Coming off their first win of the season over Waterloo Christian, the Meskwaki Lady Warriors (1-1) hosted the GMG Wolverines (1-1) on Friday, December 4th. The Wolverines (5-4) finish to end the season last year carried over to the early portions of this season as the Lady Warriors fell by a score of 54-33.

Starters for Meskwaki were as follows: Grace Tahahwah, Marcelena Guevara, Delecia Guevara, Kailee Pushetonequa, and Tori Lasley.

The Wolverines countered with a lineup of: Mable Dieleman, McKensie Vaske, Katie Airey, Blaire Sonderleiter, and Josie Claassen.

The game got underway in an all too familiar state for the Lady Warriors. The Wolverines capitalized on early miscues from Meskwaki with high percentage transition buckets. The length of GMG just posed all sorts of problems for Meskwaki down low as they could tally just three points in the first quarter. On the other end, five Wolverines found the scoring column in the first with Sonderleiter leading the way with four as the Lady Warriors trailed 12-3 after one.

The balanced attack of GMG continued into the second quarter as they rotated in a fresh five off the bench to help limit the starters minutes. The strategy proved to be a back breaker for Meskwaki as they just couldn’t stick with GMG out in transition. Airey and Kelsey Vaverka led the way with four points each as the Wolverines dropped 19 points in the second quarter. A last second Delecia Guevara lay-up ended a Meskwaki point drought of over five minutes as the Lady Warriors trailed 31-9 heading into halftime.

Despite a comfortable 22 point lead, the Wolverines played their starters the entire third quarter with familiar results. GMG’s front-court of Sonderleiter and Claassen combined for nine points in the third which effectively put the game way out of reach. Freshman center Tori Lasley’s admirable effort continued in the third as she led all Meskwaki scorers with four points.

With the game well in hand, the Wolverines once again emptied their bench, but were met with some opposition. The Lady Warriors continued to battle till the buzzer as they outscored GMG 16-10 to close the game. Grace Tahahwah’s frustrating night ended with a couple lay-ups while Sara Ikebe led the way in the fourth with six points.

The loss dropped the Lady Warriors to (1-2) on the season. The team has since lost a close one to Janesville and was defeated on the road by division rivals North Tama and Don Bosco. Sitting at a record of (1-5), Meskwaki’s next challenge will be trying to knock-off the undefeated Dunkerton Raiders (7-0) on the road. The game will ensue at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15th. Until then, the scoring leaders for this game were as follows: D. Guevara (8), Ikebe (8), Lasley (7), Tahahwah (4), Pushetonequa (4), and Roberts (2).
